Gas Prices Aren’t Deterring Us (Kids Say Goodbye to College)
I haven’t even been home a week but I’m off again. Jeff and I are packing up the ol’ Odyssey and heading West. We’re off to the beach, San Diego to be exact, for a holiday weekend of fun. Shamu tops our list of attractions. Of course sand and waves will play a part in our weekend getaway too. And sunscreen of course. Plenty of sunscreen.
We didn’t make it to the beach a single time during my recent girls weekend in California (too busy tasting the wine maybe). In all honesty though I’m not really a beach kind of gal, in spite of having been born and raised a California girl. The Pacific ocean is way too cold for my tastes and I’m not a huge fan of sand in my crevices, know what I mean? The kids though? They love, love, love the ocean. We used to vacation in Myrtle Beach when we lived in Georgia. Oh the fun they had splashing in the surf. They’d creep ever so close to the cresting waves and taunt them to wet their toes. Those east coast beaches, if you ask me, beat the west coast ones hands down, at least when it comes to the user friendliness rating. The ocean is warm enough to wade in and that makes all the difference. Plus they have that pretty sea grass stuff growing right along the sandy beach edge. Just like in the movies. Yes, California beaches (especially along scenic Highway 1) are about as gorgeous as they come with the rocky cliffs that give way to water as blue as you’ve ever seen. But user friendly, eh, not so much. Typically temperatures at California beaches don’t climb all that high and chances of clear skies are slim to none. East coast beach towns get warm as any inland places making the cool ocean water a welcome treat as opposed to something you force yourself to do because you can’t very well visit the ocean without taking a dip now can you?
I’m supposed to be packing right now. My mission is to have the car packed and ready to go by the time Jeff gets home from his short work day. Seeing as how I have yet to even lug the suitcase back out from the closet it seems I’m running a tad behind. So I suppose I should get busy. The salty ocean air is beckoning.
Have a great weekend friends! Light a sparkler for me.

Sounds like FUN! Have a great trip!
We just got back from a trip to San Diego. The water was freezing, but my three year old didn’t care. I’m like you in that I’m not so much of a beach person. Actually, the beach itself is all good, I just hate the fact that the sand always seems to find its way back to wherever you are staying.
Enjoy your trip!
Oh, it will be wonderful! Feed a seal or two for me!
Steph
Have fun in San Diego! Say hi for me…we used to live there before moving here. Bundle up (or at least layer…;)).
Have a fantastic time! We’ll miss you around here!
Wow, you’re leaving us again?
Good for you. The “sand in the crevices” made me laugh…I guess it doesn’t bother me all that much because I LOVE the ocean (the Atlantic, though…I agree the Pacific is too cold). Have a fabulous 4th, Darcie!
Have an awesome trip!
I agree! I am a Long Island girl transplanted to the midwest - I LOVE the Atlantic. At this stage in our lives usability rates high!
You are a wonderful writer - I enjoy your blog so much… Me - not quite the writer, but I love to document our lives!
Enjoy your trip!
sounds like a great time. but like you, i’m a big fan of the east coast beaches. think that’s where we’ll be tonight…
East Coast, west coast….give me the GULF coast anytime. Have fun!
Oh gas its insane here… but we are travelers as well. We live in NC actually and love the beach. We are about an hour 1/2 from nagshead. I was a mrytle beach girl growing up tho. since that was closer at that time.
TO bad my 3 year old is so scared of the ocean he wont get within 100 feet of it.. seriously.. so scared. We may try another beach trip soon w/ a few friends… and maybe get him to 20 feet distance
I hope!
Cute blog tho. im a 1st timer here
Oh, I love the beach! We “vacay” in Myrtle Beach every September. How’s that for a coincidence?! I’m counting the days till we leave. Hope you have a great trip. San Diego is beautiful — even if the beaches aren’t as “user friendly.”
Hope you guys have a great trip. I should be packing right now too. We’re off for a little mini-break ourselves…to LANCASTER. Now, don’t get to jealous now, you hear?
I hope you had a great weekend!
I COMPLETELY agree on the whole east/west beach scene. The East Coast beaches are a lot more swimmer friendly. The other thing I am not crazy about on the west coast is the tar you pick up on your feet after a day of playing on the beach!
