He’s Two Today

August 14, 2008 · 23 comments

Seeing as how he was my first baby boy, I didn’t know what to expect.

I’d heard horror stories, from moms of boys.  They warned of lizards in pockets, rocks in dryers, and bloody skinned up knees.

Perhaps those things are in my future.

I’m okay with that.

For now, I’m enjoying the sweet parts of this perfect little man, the parts I didn’t expect.

I never expected that the smell of boy sweat differed from that of a little girl.  Or that I would actually enjoy breathing it in.

I never expected that shopping for little cargo shorts and polos and baseball caps would be just as much fun as picking out frilly pink dresses and bold striped tights.

I never expected that the fresh discovery of choo-choo trains and garbage trucks and race cars would be invigorating.

I never expected that his determination to “do it” (without help that is) would be endearing.

Or that he’d request songs at bedtime: “Grace” (Amazing Grace) and “Baby” (Rock-a-Bye) among his favorites.

I never expected any of these things, but I’m so very thankful for each and every one.

For his dimpled little tush and his solid, stocky body.  For those big baby blues and the blond locks that curl if we let them get long enough.  For his running and jumping and that irresistible giggle.  For the excited “Mooooooo-mmy” he yells out from his crib when he hears me pad past his room in the morning.  For the way he asks for his “hunt” (milk) at the start of his day.  For the sight of him exploring bugs and lizards in the backyard.  For his love of books and animals and jets.

He’s two today.

And like I always did with his sisters before him, I wonder how my heart will possibly remain intact if my love for him continues to grow with each passing year.

Happy Birthday little man.

Happy Birthday Jayce! I agree. Shopping for boys’ clothes is so cool, playing boys games is so much fun, and every time I think of him marrying some girl, living with her and having his own family, my heart breaks apart. (Even though I’ve prayed for him and his life and his future wife and ‘given it over’ … all that stuff.)

Aw, now I’m crying here! I’ve had a rough week and my boy Nat has helped me through it. Without his cuddles, I think I would have fallen apart.

Sons can wrap your hearts around their little fingers …. and break it too.

Happy Birthday sweet boy.

Aw, he is so precious! I just want to squeeze the stuffins out of him. :)

Happy birthday little man!

(My inclination was to say ‘sweet boy’, but I remembered how Chris says that is ‘not cool’ and I refrained. Manly man and all. lol)

Happy Birthday! Love the middle photo of him – classic boy. My baby turned 3 in June & he’s all boy now as much as I hate to admit it. Well except he’s still in diapers…that’s another story.

Happy Birthday, sweet little man! Always remember to be good to your mama, because she loves you so much.

He is beyond cute, Darcie. And your description of having a boy…well, now I want to have one.

When I had my daughter I never thought I could be a “Boy Mom”, but 18 mos later when I had my son my whole world changed. What a joy it is to watch him grow, discover and learn every day of his 3 1/2 years.

Happy Birthday Jayce! You are a cutie!

Woohoo, happy birthday Jayce! I love his birthday pictures you posted that were taken on his last birthday, I bet you got some cute pictures from this year’s party.

When you visit Disney, will he wear his birthday 2 shirt. I bet the CMs would love to shower him with a little extra birthday love!

I hope you have a great weekend and that Jayce has the best birthday ever!

What a cutie!
I do not have girls, but the power of a little man hugging your legs and saying “hugs” as he grabs you around the neck is something was unprepared to love as much as I did! I am hoping there are no lizards in my future… I already have the skinned knees!
Happy Birthday to your little man!

Happy Birthday to Jayce! I’m like you. There is nothing quite like the smell of sweaty little boys. My hubby thinks I’m weird. I dream of seeing a lineup of sweaty little boys at my bar, eating chocolate chip cookies. But in my dream, only one of them is mine.

I think I’m more sorry right now than ever before that we haven’t (and may not ever) experience the joy that is a baby boy – this was so beautifully written. Happy birthday to Jayce – I hope he had a wonderful day! :)

Happy birthday! I have two little boys myself (2 and 1) and think they are the best . . . wouldn`t trade them for girls for anything in the world. I just love those sticky kisses, handfuls of potato beetles brought into the house and the cute little jean overalls that they wear out too fast. :D Boys rock.

You summed it up. I love the smell of boy head sweat – I really do. And each one’s has been different. And that determination? a favorite characteristic.

I love boys. I love that I have two of them. Cargo shorts rock.

Happy birthday to your curly haired blondie – he’s a year and a day ahead of Robby, my curly haired blondie:)
