Wondering How We Measure Up

Yeah, so I’m curious how often these things happen in households across America.  Tell me how yours compares to mine.

1.  The bathrooms in our house are cleaned once every two weeks.

2.  We allow TV during dinner, but only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

3.  Seafood is served, um, precisely, never.  (Shame on me, I know).

4. I exercise 4-5 times per week.

5.  Admittedly I’m awful at remembering to clip the kids’ toe and fingernails.  Promise you won’t get grossed out?  Okay then, I’ll tell you.  It’s almost a quarterly thing around here.  I’m sort of grateful when they accidentally scratch me because it reminds me that they probably need a good clip down.

Your turn to spill it.  Inquiring minds want to know…

  1. Gee whiz. You sure you want to know?

    1. I clean the bathroom throughout the week whenever something new pops up. Like pink mold. Or hair in the sink. It’s never completely clean, but never embarrassingly dirty.

    2. We eat TV dinners almost every night. But Bridoodle gets her dinner in the kitchen at the high chair. Hubster and I sit on the couch to eat afterwards. Bri plays with her toys on the living room floor.

    3. I make shrimp and grits every once in a blue moon. Otherwise, it’s only served at Red Lobster.

    4. Does walking three flights of stairs to my classroom count? (I don’t exercise).

    5. We used to clip Bri’s nails every week or two. But they’ve slowed down. Or else the daycare has been trimming them. I think I cut them 3 and a half weeks ago. They’re a little long today.

Now I feel like a bum! Anybody worse than me?

  2. I used to PIN Sonny Ma-Jiminy down and ignore the screams while I clipped his nails. But Smoochy Girl is so powerful that I can’t do hers. At All. At the moment, they just peel off (neatly! Wow!) but one day soon, I’ll - I don’t know - SEDATE her and do them properly.

(Kidding, we don’t sedate our kids. But we fantasise about it.)

  3. Alright. Well, you asked…

    1. Yes. Bathrooms get cleaned here on that same two week schedule (unless my son doesn’t get to the potty in time, in which case everything that gets covered in pee is bleached down).

    2. No TV during dinner, mainly because my oldest would never interact with us. If there is a screen to be watched, she will watch it without blinking until it’s turned off.

    3. I serve fish once or twice every two weeks, but it requires me to make something different for the kids. So, the ease of cooking seafood is kind of cancelled out by the short order cook thing.

    4. I exercise three times a week.

    5. I actually like clipping my kids fingernails! We probably do it every two weeks or so.

  4. Brooke

    Let’s see..

    1. Bathrooms get cleaned once a week but just the toilet, sinks, counters. The tub is every couple of weeks or whenever I notice it needs to be cleaned. Not sure why I don’t do it all together.

    2. No set rules for dinner and tv. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t.

    3. Love seafood! Dh makes killer fish tacos and I love shrimp. I could eat shrimp daily. Also love having fresh fish and chips at Morro Bay, king crab legs, lobster. Yum!

    4. Have a treadmill in the bedroom and I try to do that at least 3 times a week. (key word here is try! ;))

    5. Same as you. I just forget until one of them scratches me or a toe nail pokes through a sock.

  5. Hmm…

    1. bathrooms…exactly…once every two weeks ….sooner if I am just too grossed out to use it.
    2. Dinner in front of tv a lot…only hubby and I right now…when we have kids we’ll see.
    3. Sea food at least once a week.
    4. 30 minutes speed walks with dogs twice a day….does that count
    5. No kids nails to cut…my fingernails are trimmed but twonails I ignore unless they cut open my socks…
in the summer I treat myself to a pedicure.

  6. Jane Hilton

I am one of your lurkers. Started reading your blog from my daughter’s blogroll (Total Mom Haircut). I clean my bathroom every week– or I thought I did, until we put up a new light fixture. 5 CFL bulbs will show you where the dirt is in a big hurry. Soooo filthy.

  7. Okeedokee, here it is:

    1. the most frequently used bathroom is cleaned once per week. The other two, well, they get a deep clean like once per month, but are wiped down maybe three times within that month.

    2. Dinner is NEVER in front of the t.v., unless we are talking about Hokie Football. Then it is ALWAYS in front of the t.v.

    3. Sea food once or twice per week. The kids usually like it, too. And I’m not a short order cook, so they’ll like it or lump it.

    4. I never exercise. Sorry! I am just not there yet.

    5. My oldest does her own nails. The other three I try to do once per week, but the baby is so darned wiggly and hates it that I am lucky if we get to it every other week.

So that’s the dirt on me and my lifestyle!

  8. Um, yes to all but number 4. Its totally hit or miss for me. And I would add:

    6. I pack Lunchables.

  9. Fun idea for a blog post! I’m not reading many blogs this week, but I had to stop in and visit just a few!

    1. The bathrooms in our house are cleaned once every two weeks. - Yes, same here, but only because I’m blessed to have a cleaning lady.

    2. We allow TV during dinner, but only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. - Nope. No TV during dinner. We always sit at the table for dinner, and there is no TV in the kitchen.

    3. Seafood is served, um, precisely, never. (Shame on me, I know). - We have gotten lax. It used to be about once a week. But not so much lately.

    4. I exercise 4-5 times per week. - Oh, shame on me. I have fallen off the exercise wagon completely. I’m so disappointed in myself. I was doing so well until the holidays. I hope to get back on the wagon when the kids go back to school.

    5. Admittedly I’m awful at remembering to clip the kids’ toe and fingernails. - I’m pretty good with the girls but somehow my son doesn’t get his nails cut nearly enough. It’s gross. I really need to be more attentive about that.

LOL, Nicole. I reserve Lunchables for times that I’m REALLY desperate.

Fun post! Okay, time for blueberry pie… :-)

  10. 1. Bathrooms get cleaned in bits and pieces, as something needs cleaning. They only get an all-at-once cleaning before company comes.

    2. We don’t really do TV during dinner if we are eating as a famly. If there’s something on that we’re going to watch it’s usually after dinner anyway. Now if it’s just Chris and I, then it’s abut 50/50 for eating outside on the deck or eating in front of the tv. Depends on whether or not wine is involved. ;)

    3. Seafood is served once or twice a week. We used to eat it more often but Chris developed a shrimp allergy - we’re afraid we overdid it! So now we’ve cut back.

    4. I exercise daily. 30-60 minutes on the wii fit, and 30 minutes on the treadmill.

    5. I cut nails once a week.

*Disclaimer - you just happened to pick questions that make me look more together than I really am. Trust me.*

  11. mary b

    1. Bathrooms are a clean as you go thing, and when I try to follow FlyLady I do a little more heavy duty stuff ;)

    2. Dinner is always at the DR table, besides the TV is on a whole other floor. Oh wait, once in a while there’s Pizza & the Superbowl or something, so yeah 1 or 2 times a year!

    3. Seafood, we love it, so we have it a lot.

    4. Exercise could be done with a little more regularity. A little Wii Fit here, a little walking/running there…keeping up with the 4 yo…

    5. Nails get clipped when the dirt underneath grosses me out…but it’s pretty close to 1x/wk for the little guy, the 9 yo decided he is on his own.

  12. All righty - bathrooms get cleaned when they simply can’t stay the way they are, and then I only do the areas that are totally awful and leave the rest, so it is very rare that the whole room is clean at any point in time.
We don’t do tv during dinner simply because it is too far away from the high chair, which is necessary right now.
Seafood - Hubby and I it’s 2-3 times a week. Sam eats it one of those times, maybe two. Robby, no fish yet.
exercise - will be posting about this soon…
Nails - see bathroom above and envision a hand with 2 clipped nails and 3 still growing because they haven’t yet hit the “totally unacceptable” realm yet.

  13. this is a brilliant post! I’m going to have to read all the responses.

for me the bathrooms are once a week, the toilet is every other day thats to a 6 year old boy who can’t aim.

we allow tv on friday or saturday if the food is not to messy for the living room because you can’t really see the tv from the table. Sunday is off limits formal family dinner only.

we have seafood a lot much to the husbands shagrin but me and the kids love halibut, salmon and shrimp

Excercise, remind me what that is again?

And the nails, i too don’t remember until a child comes crying because one has ripped off or it’s stuck in their sock or the baby is clawing me to death. I don’t know anyone who has this on a regular schedule.

  14. Can’t wait to meet you in the big “D”

Now here’s how we measure up…
    1. The bathrooms get cleaned weekly-but not by me. Within a few hours you’d never know they were ever cleaned.

    2. We don’t normally do dinner with the TV ony because the kids are not be able to focus on the glass of milk and the tv which results in milk on the floor and a really mad daddy.

    3. Seafood is served weekly, but normall only to the hubby and the girl.

    4. Exercise. We own a gym…need I say more?

    5. Finger/toe nails. When hubby starts complaining about how bad the kid’s nails look, I clip. Comes out to about twice per month on the baby and almost never on the older two.

  15. 1. Um, I clean them when they look dirty. Is that bad?

    2. No TV at all, but Luke is only 17 months. When he’s older, it’ll probably just be a weekend thing.

    3. We eat a lot of seafood, but we’re both seafood lovers!

    4. I excercise a few times a week. We try to go for a walk every single night, weather permitting, and I try to do little things to tone.

    5. I don’t pay attention to how often I clip the fingernails and toes. Like the bathroom, when they need it, they get clipped. Or when I get a jagged fingernail in the side of the face.

  16. Susan

1.Watching TV at night during dinner is only allowed IF I can be allowed to read the newspaper while we eat.
    2. Bathrooms cleaned about every 2 weeks sounds just about right.
    3. The drama involved in clipping my 9 year olds nails just isn’t worth a regular takedown. When they become lethal I go in for the kill.
    4. I DO exercise at least 4 times a week….not so much during summer when she is out of school, but definitely during the school year.

  17. Fun post.

    1. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Surfaces get wiped down frequently, but real cleaning less so.

    2. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If there is a really big Rangers game on, or if the kids ate dinner early, then Husband will watch TV and eat on the couch. We usually sit together with no TV though.

    3. Same here. I don’t care for it and don’t know how to cook it.

    4. Exercise is at least 3 times a week, working on getting up to 4.

    5. Husband is in charge of kid nail maintenance, so I don’t really know how often it happens. Whenever he notices I guess.

  18. This is us:

    1. The bathrooms in our house are cleaned once every two weeks.

    2. We allow TV during dinner, pretty much all the time. It’s just the three of us, and I like Dr. Phil.

    3. Seafood is served, um, precisely, 4-5 times per week. Shrimp and talapia are our faves.

    4. I exercise 4-5 times per week - we go to our local Y alot. And I like to walk/run through our neighborhood.

    5. Admittedly I’m awful at remembering to clip the kids’ toe and fingernails. Jake gets a good clipping when he needs it.

  19. I’m SO glad you didn’t ask about changing sheets. I can’t even say.

    Bathrooms–you’re about right on.

TV at dinner–sometimes more often than that. You can see it from the table, so if it’s not a “family dinner” (i.e. hubby is late or out of town) I sometimes let it slide.

Seafood–2 + times a month (usually salmon or shrimp)

Exercise–I think you’re waaay ahead of the mommy curve on that one.

  20. 1. Bathrooms - once a week, sometimes once every two weeks… but if there’s a big stain or whatever, it’s cleaned up with a clorox wipe
    2. We eat dinner in front of the TV
    3. If we eat fish its either sashimi or fish fingers… mmmm… deep fried fish
    4. Exercise? what is that?

  21. Kristen

I am right there with you with the cleaning, excercise, and nails.

We do have seafood, however it is not usually cooked in my kitchen. We try and go out to eat once a weekend. I grew up and still live in a New England coastal town. My uncle is a lobsterman, in fact. Lots of good seafood around here. Personally, I like the lobster racing better than eating them, though. I do love fresh scallops and light fish! I rarely eat seafood when traveling.

We don’t do TV during dinner. My kids have dinner with my mom during the week while we are commuting home from work. We have nice sit down family meals on the weekends, to make up for missing them during the week.

  22. Um, yikes. Well, just remember that you asked, ‘k? :)

    1. The bathrooms here are cleaned either when I am completely grossed out by them, or if we happen to be expecting company - whichever comes first. Any guests who drop by out of the blue need to enter at own risk. ;)

    2. We don’t have a tv visible from our kitchen table. Therefore, on some occasions, the kids will eat at the table while their father and I eat in the living room. Sad, I know.

    3. Seafood - nope, not that I can think of. Unless you can count tuna fish. Although I’m the only one who likes even that. :)

    4. I exercise precisely never. Except for chasing the girls around and walking .000001 miles an hour down the street either pulling Becca in the wagon or with Abby as she rides her bike. Oh, and lots of stairs now that we moved our bedroom into the basement. That has to count for something, right?

    5. And as for clipping finger and toenails - you pretty much said it all. :)

  23. Catching up on my bloggy reading, I’ve been neglectful. But, this should make you feel better.

    1. The bathrooms in our house are cleaned once every two weeks, when the cleaning lady comes.

    2. We allow TV during dinner ummm…ya every night. Kids eat and watch in the den. Husband and I eat at the kitchen island (or standing), usually with one or two kids on our laps, not with the tv on but usually doing a gazillion other things at the same time. .

    3. We don’t serve seafood. Maybe shrimp, but who has time to cook that? Sometimes sushi takeout.

    4. I exercise never. Even with all my talking and stalking the UPS guy at Gamestop for the Wii Fit.

    5. I don’t remember the last time I clipped any toes or fingernails. It’s sad I know. But they don’t seem that bad to me. Unless I get scratched, then I know it’s that time again.
