Insomnia

March 30, 2009 · 23 comments

I’ve been awake since way way too early this morning.  I don’t even want to say what time I started tossing and turning in bed because it will only make me angry.  Here’s a clue for you though: it’s an hour that rhymes with shoe.

Ugh.

Apparently my brain lacks the shut-off function.  God only knows what trigger has been pulling me from sleep at roughly the same time in the middle of the night.  Every night.  Once it does though my mind starts ticking off the to-do’s and fretting over the oops I forgots.

And it just. won’t. stop.

Oops I forgot to make orthodontist appointments.  I need to transfer that tax return over to savings.  Did I forget to put the cover back on the spa last night?  I should have signed Cass up for Challenger baseball.  Oh yeah.  And Kennedy wants me to check in to dance classes.  I wonder if there’s such a thing as snake repellent?  I think Jayce has a well-check on Tuesday morning.  Or was it Wednesday?  Dang.  Should have taken those muffins out of the freezer for breakfast tomorrow.  Standardized testing week – need brain food.  I think ADT messed up our billing cycle again.  Nothing to blog about.  Laundry.  Return those jeans.  Wash the car.  Water the plants.  Figure out how to make Torri’s strapless dress comply with the spaghetti strap dress code for 8th grade promotion.  Bathroom cleaning week.  Overflowing inbox.  Need. a. vacation.

I’m operating on overdrive.  So excuse me if I seem a bit scattered.

It’s only because I am.

I’m convinced that’s why I wake up so tired. My brain races with all the same things (thoughts, questions, things to remember, etc etc) right when I lay down for bed. My dreams must be so crazy.

Bummer! I have been having trouble GOING to sleep for the same reasons. Too much on the brain.

I could have written this post today. I actually went to bed early at 9:45, but was wide awake from MIDNIGHT until FOUR!!! WHAT?!?! WAY too many things on my mind, I guess! Let’s hope for a good night’s sleep tonight!

Have you tried a rubber mallet? A good whack right in the middle of the forehead should do it. If you’re not up for that, try putting a notepad and pen on your nightstand. When you wake up with too much going on in your brain, just write your concerns down on your notepad so you can “worry” about it in the morning. That could do the trick! But I still vote for the rubber mallet.

I have used wendy’s suggestion of the list by the bed many times, and it does indeed work. My most effective method of getting to sleep when I can’t sleep? I think about getting up and cleaning the toilets, or some other equally heinous chore. Suddenly I’m sooooo sleepy. If that doesn’t work, I just go ahead and get up and do all that stuff that is driving me nuts. Except the phone calls. Cuz that would just be rude. That way you are that much ahead of the game when you crash and burn at about 10am.

Tylenol PM works wonders!

Put a notepad and pen next to your bed, write it all down, snuggle up to Jeff and go back to sleep. I’m sure its not that easy, but I’m all about making lists!

Oh I do that too! I sleep okay, but once something wakes me up it is SO hard to fall back to sleep with all the to-dos running in my head!

Oh and thanks for stopping by my blog!

Kelly P has the right idea…write it all down. That’s what I do. I have to, or else I forget everything.

I’m the worst at checking on the kids…did I check on Ella? I didn’t touch her though to make sure she was breathing. I’m sure she’s fine. What if she’s not? I’d better go check on her. Oh, I forgot to fill her humidifier. I need to get these clothes in her drawer before they get unfolded. And this doesn’t belong in her room…how’d that get in here? I’ll just go put this away and then go to bed.

Etc., etc., etc. It never ends. :)

Doesn’t it make you feel better to know you’re not the only one?!

Oh, I hear you!! Add to the to-do lists a 7-month-old who wants to nurse every two hours overnight lately… Sleep-deprived mommies unite! :)

I do this, too! It’s horrible now that I’m pregnant because I can’t make it through the night without needing to use the bathroom. Then instead of just falling right back asleep, my brain DOES NOT shut up. I’m so tired every morning.

Oh – you forgot about another question that kept you awake – ‘how can I sneak up on my husband while he gets dressed and scare him half to death?’

I don’t have the shut off value on my brain either. I keep a pad of paper and a pen by the bed and write all this stuff down and it does help to get it off my mind and it also makes sure I won’t forget it.

I totally do this too. My hubby falls asleep in like .5 seconds and it drives me crazy!

I’m a lifelong insomniac and feel your pain. I pray that you get a good night’s rest – and if not I have 2 words for you: TYLENOL PM. ;)

Going to pray for one nights complete rest. When it comes you’ll feel like a new woman.

The life of a busy mom. Sigh.

I hope you get some sleep tonight.

And they do make a snake repellent.

Well, for your yard. I bought it and it is acts like a fence to keep them out. After one slithered up on my front porch and was looking in my glass door, I decided it was time I put that stuff all around my porches.

Have peace, Darcy. It will all get done.

I HATE that. What I do is get up and go write it all down. Then I come back to bed and SLEEP. Good luck getting thru it!!!

I’ve definitely had nights like that. But not lately. I think having a new baby helps me to sleep very soundly indeed.

Speaking of sleep, I need to head to bed soon – or I’ll regret it in the morning.

We must be long lost sisters! My mind really starts to race when it’s time to sleep. The only thing saving me right now is I’m running on less than fumes, so I just crash when I go to bed (way too late)!

I do that, too. Drives me NUTS. And hence the name “Sleepless Mornings.” When I’m stressed, I don’t do much sleeping. Sometimes I’ll be up from 2-4 and then go back to sleep until my alarm. I enjoy the quiet time, but not the sleep deprivation. I hope it gets better for you!

Would it help if you kept a pen & paper next to your bed & wrote down the things running through your mind? I don’t generally have trouble sleeping, but when I have trouble focusign during the day b/c of all the things going through my head, I do this & it really helps, because once they’re written down, they don’t have to fly through my head any more, I can dismiss them & take care of them later.
