You’re probably familiar with Murphy’s Law right?  You know the one: Anything that can go wrong will.

Seeing as how I fall on the glass-half-empty side of life I tend to be a believer.

And in the course of my thirty-one point five years I’ve garnered insight into other laws of the universe.

In honor of Jo-Lynne’s weekly “What I Learned This Week” carnival, I thought I’d share.

Pay attention now, these will come in handy for you sooner or later.

1. On the eve of your husband’s business trip to Baltimore, your car battery will go kaput.  But only if you’ve recently opted not to renew your AAA membership.

2.  Within moments of having your windows professionally cleaned, your peanut butter faced toddler will most certainly try to give you a smooch through the closed sliding glass door.

3.  The neon yellow flier the school sends home on Friday to remind you about teacher appreciation week will undoubtedly be lost beneath a stack of other papers and it will remain there until Monday morning.  It will, however, be discovered in the nick of time.  And by the nick of time I, of course, mean three minutes before you have to be out the door.  Leaving you precisely enough time to slap a sticky note thank-you on a Tazo tea bag and send your poor unsuspecting child off to school with it.

4.  Once you return home from dropping the kids at school (and ducking out quickly before your child presents her sorry teacher appreciation token) you will sit down at your computer to peruse your favorite blogs.  You’ll notice that your overachieving friend Heather went all Martha for the occasion and leaves you looking like a ghetto impostor.

5.  Thanks Heather.

6.  Your teenage daughter will approach you late Monday afternoon and inform you that she is required to go to the high school to register for classes on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday evening.  You will be left with no choice but to bring four children to registration night because, you remember?  Your husband will be in Baltimore.

7.  Things always come full circle.  See number 1.

So the moral of the story is that you should have gone to Baltimore and left your hubby at home with the kids?

I can totally relate to the peanut butter faced toddler!

Hey, a sticky thank you note on a tea bag is more than I got, so good for you for sending something!;)

Our school does Teacher Appreciation week in October, but it is during a week where there is no class and the teachers have conferences and meetings, so we put on a huge lunch and gift bags. I started signing up for the committee so I wouldn’t forget!

Things always go wrong when Husbands are out of town, at least in my house!

Darcie! I haven’t been by here in ages — I’m a woefully poor blog-reader these days, but as always I love your style.

And teacher appreciation week gets me every time as well, no matter how many reminders I get.

haha this cracked me up – hope the rest of the time without your hubby goes ok! :-) I am not looking forward to teacher appreciation week. I mean, my husband is a teacher so I do appreciate teachers – but I have enough trouble staying on top of things and Jayci is only 7 months old! :-)

You made me laugh! I found my son’s paper Sunday night – I decided to just send in a gift card on Wednesday and cover the whole week in one day.

As a teacher…let me say this. I would totally appreciate a post-it note with a thank you. And, the tea would be a total bonus. (I have never once received a thank you note from a kid or a parent)!

Thanks, I needed your sense of humor to give me a lift in this day of never ending loans with little sleep!

Right there with ya….I like to call them “of course! moments”
because of course! the cat will cough up a hairball in the kitchen after you mop the floor. And of course! you’ll drop one full pan of meat loaf on the same clean floor when you have dinner guests coming and NEED both pans. Of course the electricians will come to re-wire your main outdoor lines on the one day of the week (today) when I am actually home all day! meaning 3-4 hours of no elec while I am home…the whole day! Of course!!!

Thanks for the smile. Hang in there this week without the Hubs!

Ooohh yes! My father always says that things happen in three’s (not sure if he’s really done the research), but that does seem to be true around here. :)

Hey, at least you gave a gift to the teacher…I’m sure many other won’t do anything, so you do get a plus for that. ;o)

OH…I wanted to ask you…I saw that you were on the Disney Mom’s panel last year. How did you get on that, and what are your thoughts? Just curious…I love WDW.

Oh man, you had a tough week. I can’t help being a believer in Murphy’s Law, myself.

Now I have to decide what to give the kids’ teachers when I have NO money or craft skills (or tea bags). Wish me luck!

I completely agree. I am a glass-is-half-full gal, but honestly the things about hubby’s business trips is totally true. When Chris is gone, it’s a given something will go wrong. Like the last time when we had a debilitating ice storm and lost power for a week. Not cool.

Sorry about the teacher thing…but I can’t believe your school sent a note home about it! I think that’s tacky. Like ‘bring me presents on this day’ people. Sheesh.

I love occasions to gift people, so holidays like this are just right up my alley. :)

Too bad you didn’t get to go to Baltimore but on the bright side the weather in Baltimore has been crummy for the last few days (hubby works in Baltimore).
Teacher appreciation has caught me unprepared this week. I have until Friday to come up with something great…no pressure, right?

Wow to Heather – she went all out for teachers. We need someone like her at my school. I’m more of the tea bag w/ post it kind of gal ;) I love the way you wrote this – reminds me of the when you give a mouse a cookie stories. Hope the rest of the week gets better.

It’s TAW here, too. I feel the pressure. Number 4 & 5 cracked me up. I’ve got one of those overachiever friends…you know who you are up there.

Oh boy. It sounds like quite a week. I HATE it when my husband goes out of town.

I can so relate to overlooking the the important school notice. Which reminds me, I need to make some peanut butter balls tomorrow for Teacher Appreciation Week.

I don’t know what it is but whenever my husband is gone and things go wrong I hold a grudge against him. It’s so stupid too because usually he’s gone for business and as the sole income earner you’d think I’d be more understanding.

Here’s mine:
At a week and a half post partum toddler will start taking 1-hr naps. But the one day this week that hubby stay home to help, said toddler will take a 4-hr nap leaving hubby to wonder what all the complaining is about.
