Cassidy will fall asleep tonight with her tonsils intact for the very last time. Tomorrow morning we will head to the hospital where a highly skilled doctor will remove them. Ideally the anesthesiologist will be equally gifted and will successfully render my little girl unconscious during the surgery and then just as successfully wake her up when the time comes. Both Jeff and I will be there holding her hand when she wakes up in recovery and acts so loopy it will surely scare the pants off me. She’ll spend the night at the hospital under Jeff’s watchful eye (his as opposed to mine because I am oh so incapable of dealing with medical situations). I’ll pick them both up the following morning and we’ll begin spoiling Cass with smoothies and mashed potatoes and ice cream immediately.
What won’t happen is we won’t be one of the few cases where the scabs “bleed out” causing an emergency situation.
That won’t happen because the mere mention of scabs and bleed out in the same sentence gives me hives.
Have I ever mentioned that I’m a little squeamish when it comes to blood flowing from my children? When I know another adult is nearby in those situations I typically close my eyes and yell for help. When I’m the only capable adult I’m slightly more proactive. Only slightly though.
This is why I’m not a nurse. Nor could I run a day care.
As you might imagine–what with my aversion to blood and needles and stuff–I’m just a tad apprehensive about the big event tomorrow.
So if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go take a valium now. With a tequila chaser maybe.
Just kidding.
Sorta.

Good luck! I completely know what you’re going through – I’ll be thinking of you guys! Oh -and when you decide to make Cassidy a sprite slushie, make a margarita slushie for yourself… I did that, and it made everything better for all of us!
My son just went through this procedure. It’s actually pretty quick when all is said and done considering they are cutting off things in their throats… but my son bounced back quickly…
Hope it all goes well! :)
Good Luck to Cassidy….she’ll be in my prayers tomorrow! Keep us posted. Hang in there, MOM!
She’s going to do great tomorrow – no worries! It’s nice that they’re going to take them out. A lot of doctors won’t do that these days and the kids just have to suffer.
Have you considered asking them to put you out during the surgery?
Sounds scary, but I’m sure you’ll all pull through. I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow.
Good luck tomorrow! =)
I don’t know about any bleeding out. I had the surgery when I was 22, and there was no bleeding. They even say it’s harder for adults to have a tonsillectomy, and I had imagined it would be much worse than what it actually was. She should be just fine. =)
Cassidy will be so thankful you took a leap outside your comfort zone and did this. I had tons of strep problems growing up but didn’t get my tonsils out until I was 20-years-old. It’s MUCH harder to recover from that surgery as an adult. But I’m still glad I did it because I’ve never even had a suspicion of strep since!
I’ll be thinking about you!
Poor Cassidy! Good luck, I’ll be thinking of you.
Fearless Prediction:
Cassidy – Tonsils = Totally Fine Before You Know It
Darcie + Margarita = *See Above
Hang in there, Mama!
Praying for y’all!
I’m praying for you guys. I hope everyone (including you) pulls through without any problems. My husband is the same way. He can’t stand blood, hospitals, etc. He almost fainted when we were in the ER for my little one’s broken arm? All I heard was “Dad needs a gurney!”
I hope it went well and easy for her..sans scabs and mom freak outs!
And, I would still enjoy the tequila anyways…just in case:)
I hope it went well! I’m with you on the valium and tequila chaser. Anything scab related is just gross.
I’ll be thinking of Cassidy and the rest of you. Sending her happy thoughts to heal quickly and enjoy being spoiled!
oh, good luck! bless her sweet little heart. I am yet to have to see my daughter go through any sort of surgery but I am pretty sure I wouldn’t handle it well…
I’m late on this, but I hope all went well. And that you had your chaser:)
Hope Cassie is doing well. =) Get well soon.
Well obviously ignore my phone message today! I am clearly behind on blog reading. So sorry. I hope all went well with Cass and she (and you!) are recovering peacefully right now.
I had mine removed as an adult and it was HORRIBLE! The doc at the time said that when kids have it done it’s no big deal and they bounce right back, but adults really struggle. Not sure why he felt the need to rub that in.
