Last weekend we had friends over for dinner (you should go say hello btw, because Becca is new to the blogosphere). They’re good peeps. So good that they brought fresh flowers. Two bunches in fact. One for me. And then their youngest son Jack (who may or may not be majorly crushing on one of my girls. You didn’t hear it from me though) brought one for the girls.
Ahem.
I absolutely love having fresh flowers around the house and I happen to be of the opinion that a beautiful bouquet makes a lovely hostess gift. But that’s beside the point. The point is that as much as I love having flowers around, I seldom do. So I had to really climb and dig and search for a vase. Two vases actually.
Which made me realize that perhaps I need to buy flowers more often.
So that less climbing and digging and searching for a vase would be in order.
On the other hand, there are those tools around the house that hardly have any counter time–or cupboard or closet as the case may be–because they are so frequently in use.
I thought I’d share a couple of those with you today.
You can thank me later.
See this?

It’s my strainer. Otherwise known as the kitchen MVP. Seriously. I wash this thing like, I dunno, umpteen times each day. Okay maybe not umpteen, but certainly no less than three. I would be lost without it. Or stuck eating homemade strawberry ice cream full of itty bitty strawberry seeds. Ew.
And then there’s this.

It’s my obviously overused vegetable brush. I’m sure there is some fancy shmancy football word for runner up MVP but I don’t know it so suffice it to say that, next to my strainer, this is the most used item in my kitchen. We try to go heavy on the fruits and veggies. And knowing what I know about pesticides I insist on scrubbing the heck out of those things before they make it anywhere near our mouths.
Judging from the looks of my veggie brush I’m thinking another trip to the Crate and Barrel is in order.
Moving right along though.
Ah. These guys.

I’m the world’s most annoying drinker. Because if I attempt to take a sip from a cup containing any type of beverage with ice, I make horrible slurping sounds. Unless I have a straw. Apparently the ability to drink in a ladylike fashion was not coded into my genetic make-up. Which is why we always have a healthy supply of straws on hand in the pantry.
Last but not least…

Uh huh. My hand weights. I use them nearly each and every day. Sometimes Gilad from Fit TV keeps us company. Other days it’s Jillian. But no matter who’s kicking my butt on any given day, these little babies are doing their part to add a touch of definition to my arms.
And shoulders.
And back.
Sigh.
So there ya have it. The four tools that see me through. Day in and day out.
What say you? Which tools would you rate as your own MVP’s?

A strainer? Seriously? I can’t even think of more than a couple of uses for one. Just what’s going on in your kitchen anyway?
Darcie,
I have been meaning to say that I’m so glad Jayce is ok. I’m a lifeguard and can only imagine if I had to rescue one of mine I don’t know if I could function. Also, I love Becca’s blog. I need to tell her that too.
I must confess that I did not know vegtable brush existed. I have been using a second fingernail cleaner thingie (forgot what they are called) that is marked so that I don’t get the under the nail icks on my produce. I will have to find a crate and barrel and pick one up.
Hope all is well.
Amy
I can’t believe a coffee pot didn’t make your list. It is the top of mine. Also, my nice Santuko knife. A cutting board and my high-sided skillet.
Things at my house are so interesting.
Hope things are returning to normal at your house.
My youngest daughter, who has autism, was lost at VBS a couple of weeks ago. She was 3/10 of a mile from the church wandering down the road. I still haven’t recovered from that. She is never out of my site now. So I say, Hover away!
Strainer for sure. It was my MVP for making chicken stock this weekend. Love it.
Pampered Chef can opener, even my kids can do it.
ummm…that’s all I got. Not at home, so not as easy. lol
You’re so sweet – thanks for the link! I would have to crawl around for a vase if anyone brought me flowers, too. I say we blame that on our husbands… they should be bringing them home weekly, don’t ya’ think?
And yes, Jack had big smile on his face last night when he was asking when we were going to have another movie night… He loves Miss Kennedy :-)
Hmmm… MVP’s of my house? I have to agree with the strainer, my handy-dandy fruit and veggie wash, and my camera. Three things I couldn’t live without and use every day. My weights should be on this list… I’ll work on their comeback next week.
What a fun post! Now you have me thinking…I’ll have to get back to you on that one.
BTW…the straw/slurping thing had me giggling out loud! too cute.
Well none of your MVPs would make my list, though the weights definitely should. This is an interesting idea. Can we pretend we were tagged and steal it? ;)
I’m assuming they don’t all have to be kitchen related? Kitchen-wise I would say my Wok and my toaster. I seriously use my toaster every day. But my ultimate MVP is my iPHONE!
haha.. I guess your readers dont know that the coffee pot only see s the light of day when mom and I are their or after a long night of playing your brillant game btw can u email me that to me..All my freinds cant wait to play. The mvp of our house is the 62 inch tv the ipod dock and the pain killers after our long fun nights.
I love fresh flowers also. My husband thinks they’re a waste of money because they die. So, was the pop he drank a waste of money because he … well, you know… it doesn’t stay in your body, dude! ;)

My husband and I have had our share of marriage problems, and we’ve been through several years of counseling. One day, I told the counselor, “My husband never buys me flowers.” He asked why and my husband said he didn’t think of buying flowers. “Are you worth it?” asked the counselor of me. “Yes!” I said, without flinching. “Then why not buy them yourself?” he asked.
So at least once a month, I head to Sam’s or the local florist, and I purchase 1 dozen red roses for myself. It’s decreased a lot of stress in our marriage!
Go buy yourself some flowers! And why not splurge and get a REALLY nice vase too! :-)
What a fun post! I use our strainer every day. We use our bagel cutter a lot too.
By the way, Carie, I love the idea of your counselor! My husband never buys me flowers either. I think I’ll splurge and go buy myself some. :)
Do you keep your weights in your kitchen or was it just a coincidence that the rest of your MVPs were kitchen items? But come to think of it, weights in the kitchen might not be a bad idea. Get in a few reps before the water starts boiling…
Mine MVPs are my Wustof knives, my KitchenAid mixer and my coffee bean grinder. I think I have to throw in my breast pump too. Saves me money on formula and let’s me take a break away every now and then.
The weights caught me off guard a little…I was thinking maybe you were using them to pound chicken breasts!
At first thought all my MVPs are kitchen items:
Joyce Chen scissors
Senseo coffee pot (I am the only coffee drinker)
Kitchen Aid stand mixer
Pampered Chef Stoneware
Cuisinarts Dutch Saute Pan
George Forman Grill (a gift from DH I never thought I’d use as much as I do)
