The Upside of Helicopter Parenting

July 30, 2009 · 12 comments

I’ve been maybe a touch on the spastic side since Jayce’s accident.

More so than usual.

He slept next to my bed for a week.

When I moved him back to his room I couldn’t help but check on him six times before I went to bed.

And even then I turned our baby monitor up so loud (and got used to sleeping in spite of it) that now if it were to break I’d need somebody to crackle cellophane in my ear before I could even think about drifting to dreamland.

Eight days post accident Jayce developed a cough.

Which I swore was pneumonia.

Jeff, on the other hand, swore I was crazy.

As it turns out?

Pneumonia.

Or borderline at least.  The radiologist was noncommittal in the report he sent after reading the chest ex-ray.

Our pediatrician looked at the ex-ray too.  And didn’t want to say one way or the other.  But he did go ahead with antibiotics.  To be on the safe side.

If it is pneumonia, Jayce could care less.  It certainly isn’t slowing him down any.

But still.

Pneumonia.

Pneumonia that would have gone haywire were it not for my hovering.  Hovering which admittedly may border on stalking, were he not my child of course.

The moral of the story?

Yeah.  I don’t really have one.

Just thought I’d share.

I’m a big fan of the helicopter parenting:) After Sam had his teeth knocked out I got crazy at any and all playgrounds. I still am tense and screeching most of the time when we’re out and about. A little crazy. But hey – you were right, right?

I read about what happened and just want to say how thankful I am that you are all ok. When I saw your first post I really wasn’t sure what we readers might learn. The story is awful and horrifying. I’m sure you will remember those images for a very long time. But Darcy, I’m so glad everyone is ok.

Ugh! Can’t tell you how many times my girls have had pneumonia. Probably develops because I am not a helicopter mom and I delay taking them to the doc for too long – isn’[t that awful?

Could Jayce have been more susceptible because of his recent incident? Poor kiddo.

Hang in there mom!

I hope the antibiotics work quickly! I think Jayce is a lucky boy to have a mom so carefully watching over him!

I think you have the right to some helicopter parenting after what all you’ve been through. And also, kudos on catching the pneumonia! Moms instincts do know best after all! :)

When I give advice to new moms (only solicited advice, of course), I always tell them to trust their instincts. That THEY are the expert on their child. Even more so than dad (because really, we’re home with them 24-7, right?).

Good thing you followed yours! Good luck with getting him well!

Boo just had pneumonia. It took me taking her to another dr before they did a chest x-ray and found it. It was pretty bad at that point. She is almost back to normal now…two months later. lol

Hovering can be good. Plus, you just had THE scare of your life so it is more than allowed! Hugs!

Moral of the story? You’re connected to your child on such a level that no one who isn’t a Mother could ever understand. We Mother’s are completely amazing people, you know?
