Little Boys

May 15, 2010 · 19 comments

One of the nicest things about having a little boy: he sneaks in like a little elf and leaves me flowers when I least expect them.  Like this morning, when I had turned my back to rinse something in the sink.  I went back to my breakfast-making post and saw the daintiest of little yellow flowers.  Just waiting.

I rode in an ambulance with him again on Wednesday night.  Croup.  Again.  He woke up bark-coughing–oh how I despise that sound–and it soon escalated.  No feeling is quite as helpless as watching your child struggle to breathe.  And not being able to do a damn thing about it.

There was 911.

There were paramedics.

The ambulance.

The hospital.  An all-nighter.

Breathing treatments.

But he’s okay.

Almost back to his old self.  Almost.

They are on the verge of opening up a hospital wing in his honor.

Darcie, have you ever tried treating him with homeopathy? My daughter started getting bad croup as a baby, too, and our midwife recommended aconite and spongia, along with vitamin C (we used diluted Emergen-C in a bottle) and echinacea tincture. The aconite and spongia would provide relief within 20 minutes. We still use this regimen whenever our kids get croupy.

I know how scary it is! Make sure you use a cool vaporizer in his room, as the dry desert air makes it worse. Hope he’s feeling better quick!

I remember croupy nights with his dad too. But, he eventually outgrew it. It was never so bad as a hospital visit but we spend lots of time in a steamy bathroom in the middle of the night. Scary …

So, so scary. Give him a hug for me, ok? And you, too.

Oh, dear. Glad to hear your little man is okay. I know from experience that it’s a nightmare watching your child struggle to breathe. Wishing you a peaceful evening and easier breathing! “May you never take a single breath for granted”

I can’t even imagine all the thoughts going through your head while in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. You absolutely have an angel on your shoulder. I only hope (he or she) stays there forever. God bless you…..

I LOVE that picture of the buttercup. (Is it a buttercup?)

I am so glad he is okay. Poor little guy. He seems like such a sweetie pie! Soon he’ll be right back to running around and getting all sweaty with the stinky little smell boys get, and picking some flowers for Mom.

I’m kind of partial, but I think little boys are awesome! So very sweet.

I hope yours is completely back to his old self very soon. :)

Not sure if you are a fan of Pioneer Woman or not but she just posted that while they were in Orlando, FL, they had to take an ambulance ride for her youngest son for croup! Wild huh! Glad both boys are fine!

How scary! I hope he’s recovered and back to his lively self now.

P.S. Have you made any decisions related to your “Stay or Go?” quandary?

I know your worry; it is so scary to have your child that sick. I’m glad to hear that he is on the mend.

oh wow, I went through that with my son, except he was having asthma attack and I thought it was croup… we spend three days in the hospital – he was connected to the oxygen… terrifying experience… I can imagine what you went through… I hope he’s better now. take care!

Bless his heart! I am the mom of two boys…almost grown, now. They both suffered with croup when they were little.

I had a pediatrician who told me to do the following:
*At the first sign of any kind of a sniffle, I began dosing my boys with plain ol’ Robitussin – in the green and white box. No letters after the brand name (like D or DM). The only active ingredient is guaifenesin.
*Set up a vaporizer in the child’s bedroom.
*Elevate the head of the bed. We usually put pillows under the head of the mattress.

This greatly reduced our emergency trips to the doctor/hospital.

Disclaimer: I am not advising you to do this…I’m just sharing what worked for MY sons. Check with your own doctor for the best advice!

Hope your son is feeling better now!
