Taco-fied Turkey Burgers

June 14, 2010 · 15 comments

A couple of weeks ago, during our weekly trip to Whole Foods, Jeff spotted a taco’d up version of a hamburger on the cover of a foodie magazine.  In typical carnivorous fashion, he proceeded to drool over it before he remembered that, currently, ours isn’t so much a red-meat eating household.  {Read: I’m not a red meat eater and since I make up one-third of our current population my opinions weigh heavily}.

If I’m being honest, though, I have to admit that the guac-ified version of that burger was drool-worthy.  And, being the guac  addict culinary genius I am, I doctored that burger up in my mind’s eye, dreaming of ways to adapt it.

Thus was born my healthier version: The Taco-fied Turkey Burger.

I’m not big on writing down recipes, so I’m giving you the abridged version.

Ingredients:

1 pound of ground turkey
a half-palmful of chili powder
a heaping palmful of cumin
1 clove of garlic
1/2 a lime
about 1/4 cup of your favorite salsa
plenty of black pepper

For toppings, be sure to have on hand:

guacamole (preferably homemade but store-bought stuff works in a pinch)
cheese (we had jack on hand, but cheddar or pepper jack would be yummy too!)
Pico de gallo
sour cream

To make your turkey burgers, combine all the ingredients in that first list.  Shape them into patties and grill them until cooked through.  I couldn’t begin to guess as to how long each side should be cooked for.  That’s Jeff’s arena.  Sorry.

Once your grill boy brings them in all nice and cooked up, top each patty with your favorite taco toppings.

Bun {and its unnecessary calories} optional. :)

Ole.

Mmmm…I love this idea to dress up a turkey burger.

But what I REALLY love is that the next we grill, I am totally going to call our cook out cooker “grill boy”. makes me giggle just thinking about it.

Oh, the guac is a totally must!

And, I would probably cheat and use a packet of taco seasoning..I’m bad like that.

I’m with ya on being bun-less. Hot dogs, brats, burgers…they’re all so high in fat and calories anyway. Why add the bun. It tastes just as good with a knife and fork.

Looks delish! I’m a guac addict as well so I think I’ll need to get on this asap.

I bought that magazine at whole foods because of the taco burger front! I haven’t made it yet, but thanks for the turkey version because that is what we will be having as well. Like you, my family eats red meat, but I do the cooking.
